Lyrics: Aditya Chopra
Label: Yash Raj Music
Reciter: Shah Rukh Khan
Note: This is the poem that Shah Rukh Khan recites when he is asked by the Judge in the court if he
wants to say a few lines during his trial. In this poem, he talks about himself as the prisoner number
786 and that how he percieves the world from inside his jail cell. He compares his life there in Pakistan
to his life in India and also about the people there. He taunts to those people who believe that
everything is different and he beleives that nothing to him seems different. Then he gives examples
to show that they are all the same. He also talks about his lawyer Saamiya(played by Rani Mukerji)
that how she inspires him and wants him to fight for justice. Then he talks about his love Zaara
(played by Preity Zinta) who has come to India to his village to serve his people. This poem is recited
in such a great way by Shah Rukh Khan that every person in the courtroom gives him a standing ovation,
starting with the Judge himself.
Main qaidi number 786 jail ki salaakhon se bahar dekhta hoon
I, prisoner number 786, look outside through these bars of my prison cell
Din, mahiney, saalon ko yug mein badalte dekhta hoon
See the days, months, years turn into decades
Is miti se mere bauji ki kheton ki khushbu ati hai
From this earth, I can smell the fragrance of my father's fields
Yeh dhoop meri matti ki thandi chaas yaad dilati hai
This sunlight makes me remember my mother's chilled lassi
(Indian delicacy made from curd)
Yeh baarish mere sawaan ke jhoolon ko sang sang lati hai
This rainfall brings to me the movement of the swings during monsoon
Yeh sardi meri lodi ki aag sikh ke jati hai
This winter brings me back the memories of the fire on the Lodi night
Woh kehta hai yeh tera desh nahi
They tell me that this is not Your country
Phir kyun mere des jaisa lagta hai
Then why does it seem like mine
Woh kheta hai mein us jaisa nahi
They tell me that I am not like then
Phir kyun mujh jaisa woh lagta hai
Then why do they seem like me
Main qaidi number 786 jail ki salaakhon se bahar dekhta hoon
I, prisoner number 786, look outside through these bars of my prison cell
Sapno ke gawn se utri ek nani pari ko dekh ta hoon
I see an angel who has just stepped down from the village of dreams
Kehti hai khud ko Saamiya aur mujh ko Veer bulati hai
She calls herself Saamiya (name of Rani Mukerji's character) and calls me Veer
(name of Shah Rukh Khan's character)
Hai bilkul begani paar apno si zid woh karti hai
She is a complete stranger but she fights with me as if she knows me for too long
Uski sacchi baaton se phir jeene ko maan karta hai
Listening to her true words, I feel like living again
Uske kaasmon vado se kuch karne ko maan karta hai
Listening to her promises, I feel like doing something worthy
Woh kehtay hain ke woh koi nahi hai
They tell me that she is no one to You
Phir kyun woh mere liye duniya se ladti hai
Then why does she fight the world for me
Woh kehte hai ke mein us jaisa nahi
They tell me that I am not like her
Phir kyun mujh jaisi woh lagti hai
Then why does she seem like me
Main qaidi number 786 jail ki salaakhon se bahar dekhta hoon
I, prisoner number 786, look outside through these bars of my prison cell
Mere gaon ke raango mein lipti ek nayi Zaara ko dekhta hoon
Coloured in the colours of my village, I see a new Zaara
(name of Preity Zinta's character)
Mere khwabon ko pura karte khud ke khwab bhool chuki hai woh
On completing my dreams, she has forgotten her own
Mere logo ki sewa karte apne logo ko chhod chuki hai woh
For serving my people, she has left her own behind
Uska daaman aab khushion se bharne ko jee karta hai
I wish like filling her lap once again with all the happiness
Uske leya ek aur zindagi jeene ko jee karta hai
For her, I wish to live one more life
Woh khete hai ke mera desh uska nahi
They tell me that this country is not her's
Phir kyun mere ghar woh rehti hai
Then why does she live in my home
Woh kehte hai ke mein us jaisa nahi
They tell me that I am not like her
Phir kyun mujh jaisi woh lagti hai
Then why does she seem like me
Main qaidi number 786 jail ki salaakhon se bahar dekhta hoon
I, prisoner number 786, look outside through these bars of my prison cell
Woh khete hai ko woh koi nahi teri
They tell me that she is not related to me in any way
Phir kyun mere liye duniya se woh larti hai
Then why does she fight the world for me
Woh kehte hai ke mein us jaisa nahi
They tell me that I am not like her
Phir kyun mujh jaisi woh lagti hai
Then why does she seem like me
Main qaidi number 786 jail ki salaakhon se bahar dekhta hoon
I, prisoner number 786, look outside through these bars of my prison cell
